Blakeney Seals

The beaches in the UK are not unlike the coast of New England, where I grew up. For me the main difference is in the food- instead of lobster and clam chowder there's fish and chips- oh and the accents are a little off. Dave and I have been to the Norfolk coast a few times (our car blew up on our first trip) and on this particular trip we decided to visit the seals. I've always had a thing for seals with their big brown eyes and dog-like faces, they just melt my heart. We took a boat tour out from Blakeney Quay to the point where the seals bask on sand banks.

Seals have their young around July and August so we were just in time to see some pups!

The drive to the coast is really beautiful and really makes me appreciate living in the English countryside. The landscape, with the rolling hills and farmland, reminded us of rural Pennsylvania, where Dave is from.
On the way home we stopped at the Belgian Monk in Norwich. Introduced to us by my good friend, Jackie, it has become a favorite place to stop on the way back from the beach. It has great food and unique  beer (my favorite is their cherry beer- yumm!).
The trip was mainly to celebrate our anniversary. I can't believe we've been married so long! It feels like we're still on our honeymoon! To celebrate our one year in style, we set off a floating lantern...
it was a beautiful sight... until it caught some wind and began drifting down toward our town. We purposely went deep into the field behind our house to set it off, thinking we would avoid any disaster situations. You can imagine our panic as it disappeared over a roof a few streets away. Our town has lots of old English houses and a lantern like that can set a thatched roof ablaze with ease. Frantically we followed it until it rose again and eventually went out. It was not exactly the romantic, celebratory event we hoped for but we were relieved not to have burned down the town.
With that said, we probably wont be setting off any lanterns next year.
It has been a great first year of marriage (and with Twitterpated Travelers).
Thanks for following!
